I know there were hundreds of thousands more people at those warlocks shows in 89 than actually were there- so outside of those two shows that had huge bust outs-

What was your finest break out? What tune had been laid to rest for some time or for years and you were there for the big surprise? Also, how about any first evers? I sure wish I was at the show for the first ever Terrapin Station- still one of the best of all time.

My biggest break out was Casey Jones at RFK in the 90's. I also heard the first Ruben and Charise. I may also have caught a duprees break out at the garden in the 82-84 timeframe at MSG.

HCSS - Compton Terrace - AZ 12/6/92
New Speedway Boogie - Oakland Coliseum - CA 2/19/91

My newby friend who I took to AZ said, "I hope they play Here Comes Sunshine" in a motel room full of touring heads. Most snickered, but next day, there it was...

that is the show I was at in 92- yep with the casey- thanks all for sharing- i like to check out the audience tapes for these break outs to listen to crowd reactions- there is a site- though it has been on and off line lately, that gives the dates of every performance of every song in an easy to search format- www.rukind.com- it let's you see the gaps- englishtown 77 was the first tie in 3 or 4 years that truckin was played- i had not realized truckin was ever put on the shelf- Here comes sunshine- such a short ife for such a good song- 73-74.....then 92? too bad- why oh why did viola lee blues get shelved permanently? same thing with some of the blues for allah material

I agree with bluedevil regarding the Dark Star encore at the Greek in 1984 but the "That's it For the Other One" suite in 1985 was extremely intense.

Three stand out: Dark Star at the Greek on July 13, 1984 - full moon and all. The other two come from otherwise lackluster shows - Box of Rain breakout at Hampton (first time in ages) and electric Ripple encore at what I know as the Cap Centre but may have had a different corporate name at the time.

"The Maker" (Jerry Band)

"Nobody stopped thinking about those psychedelic experiences. Once you've been to some of those places, you think, 'How can I get back there again but make it a little easier on myself?'" (Jerry)

MSG, 1983:
First ST. STEPHEN in 5 years...fifth row center...roar from the crowd felt literally like a wave rolling from back of the room to front...."In and out of the garden he goes" line drowned out by crowd delerium...

Hampton, VA., 1986: First BOX OF RAIN in 14 years to end set one. 'Heads 3 rows deep at the pay phones soon as it ended calling folks, yelling Box of Rain! and hanging up...

Hampton again, 1988, or maybe 87, I forget: First BALLAD OF A THIN MAN...Dylan fans like myself all in a tizzy....

Nassau Coliseum, 1990: Who's that guy with the sax? That's not...it is! That's Branford Marsalis jamming on EYES!!!

Nassau 1/11/79: My first show. First Sugaree, Jack Straw, etc. etc. for me...On the bus for good, singing Thank You! For a real good time!

I caught a few bust-outs in the Washington DC area:
- first Reuben & Cherise, 3/17/91
- first Casey Jones since 1984, 6/20/92
- first Black Muddy River in nearly 4 years, 6/24/95 (maybe not a big deal to most, but this was the song that took me from casually interested in the music, to being a bona-fide Deadhead)
...and there is the breakout that maybe shouldn't have happened:
- first Rolling and Tumbling, Highgate 6/15/95 (aka "Fumbling and Mumbling")
...plus the not-quite-Dead breakout that was extra-special:
- one of only two known live versions of Freight Train played by Garcia, and the first in 11 years, 11/3/93 Albany

I have no idea if it was first, but at Merriweather in '84, they played the Beatles "Why Don't We Do It In The Road". On the way home that night there was a mattress in the road in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel... Almost wrecked the van, we were laughng so hard.
